Conventional job searches are tough, there’s no denying that, but sometimes the stress associated with being in between jobs is better for you than the stress of being in a job you hate. Some are lucky enough to begin their career on a high note, finding the job they’ll retire from in 30 years. One that always keeps them engaged, happy and climbing the corporate ladder. For the rest of us? On Average two years in the same position, no raises but more responsibilities or, even worse, the mythical writing on the wall to run from this crumbling place.
It’s a very good chance you may find yourself needing to find a better employer at some point in your career, but knowing when to leave can be difficult. Leave too early, and you may be stuck between jobs for quite a while. Too late, mountains of stress have already formed, great opportunities may have been passed on or you’re simply in too deep to make a quick, clean break.
To help you time it just right, these are the signs it may be time to put in your two weeks:
- You’ve hit a dead end.
Job development is becoming a more important factor in the workplace for younger, newer workers, and rightly so. You want a job you can grow with. If you like the company, you don’t want to quit to be one of the requirements for a promotion. If you realize the only way up is also out, it may be time to find a company with more room for growth.
- Too much complaining.
“It’s a decent place to work, but my boss always… And you wouldn’t believe how… I also can’t stand…” sound familiar? This one’s a simple rule to follow, if you have more bad than good to say, find a job where you won’t.
- You’ve clocked out.
One day you head out of work and, mentally, you never really come back. Daily tasks are a chore, meetings are met with a sigh, you’re thinking about heading home within the first 10 minutes of every day. You’re over it. Boredom may sometimes come in waves. As projects close you may find yourself with a few days of emptiness, but if this becomes the new norm it’s your gut telling you to leave.
